In 2019, reports suggested rapes occurred once every 4 hours, while murders occurred once every 17 hours, and vehicle thefts occurred once every 12 minutes. But in 2019, in a day, the average number of necklace thefts reported were 17, whereas now an average of 24 cases of necklace thefts are reported daily.

The number of crimes in 2020 has declined compared to the previous year. There were 1,699 cases of rape, 2,186 cases of sexual harassment, and 65 cases of child molestation in the national capital. In 2019, there were 2,168 cases of rape, 2,921 cases of sexual abuse, and 109 cases of sexual harassment against children were reported.

This is the first time that cases of crimes against women have seen a steady decline, the police said. The lockdown announced in March 2020 prompted the people to stay inside their homes for four months, which has reportedly led to a decrease in criminal cases. Of the reported rape cases, only 2 percent of the accused are strangers. The number of new accused has further decreased. The number of new cases which was 2.20 in 2019, has now reduced to 1.77, the Delhi Police Commissioner NS Srivastava said.
