Bengaluru : based NIA special court has refused bail to the 10 accused individuals who were arrested in the DJ Halli and KG Halli riots case.
On August 8, 2020, an incident of riot had taken place in the DJ Halli and the KG Halli police station jurisdiction. Pulakeshi Municipal Councillor Akhand Srinivasamoorthy’s relative P. Naveen had posted a flagrant post on Facebook aimed at hurting the sentiments of another religion. The protester who had gathered outside the DJ Halli, KG Halli police station had demanded Naveen’s arrest and the gathering had turned violent afterward. During the riot, the vehicles belonging to the DJ Halli, KG Halli police station along with other public vehicles had been set on fire. Additionally, police had opened fire on the crowd citing reasons for assault on police.
A special court judge, Kasanappa Nayak, who was hearing the bail pleas of the ten accused concerning this case, reportedly refused to accept the appeal for bail submitted by the accused individuals.
The court, in its order, said plaintiffs’ lawyers have pleaded that the accused are innocent. However, a case has been registered against the accused under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. In addition, they are accused of setting fire to police vehicles and assaulting policemen. The fact that they are accused of attacking police and setting fire to police vehicles, cannot be taken lightly. On the face of it, supplementary factors were found pointing to the accused’s actions. It is therefore of opinion that the accused cannot be granted bail, the court said.
